John F. Floyd resided in Dougherty County, Georgia, when he enlisted on 22 March 1862 at the age of 23. He mustered into the Georgia 51st Infantry, Company K as a Private and was promoted to 4th Corporal on 15 November 1863. Floyd was taken prisoner at Cold Harbor, Virginia, on 1 June 1864 and held at Elmira Prison, New York. He was released from duty in 1865. From the description of John F. Floyd letter, 1864.
